Breaking Free: The Power of the Filter Bubble Algorithm

The power of the filter bubble algorithm silently shapes one’s perspective and the status quo, most of the time, we don't even realize it.

Growing up in the Philippines, I’ve always made sure to be informed with current events — watching news, reading articles and keeping up with issues. Over time, I noticed and realized something important: the information that I encounter would usually conform to my own beliefs. Thus, it made me realize that the filter bubble algorithm holds power that we should break free from. 

The filter bubble algorithm works by feeding us contents that align with our perspectives, and reinforcing what we believe in. It's something that may seem convenient, but it's actually dangerous. During the last election, I saw the danger of conforming to this algorithm. People would perceive their opinions as “facts” just because the algorithm and their feed confirmed it. This is how the algorithm can be a threat to our democracy and freedom. 

Some might say that this algorithm is not entirely bad since it offers personalized information and individuality. But at what cost? If we only conform to this algorithm, we lose objectivity and critical thinking. A skill that we must have so that we don't confuse opinions with facts. 

It's time to break free!. We cannot completely eradicate this algorithm, but we can fight its influence by being media and information literate. Let it be a practice to question what we read, verify the source of our information, analyze the data we gather, and be a critical thinker. 

Filter Bubble Algorithm is here to stay, if we allow the system to stay, and eventually it may corrupt our system of thinking and beliefs. Hence, let us use our voices and platforms to spread and promote critical thinking and not our own biases. Be aware. Be Literate. Be the change that we all need – breaking free starts from thinking beyond the box, in this case beyond the Filter Bubble Algorithm.
